This could have gone in the SEO forum, but since it is specifically about forums, I decided to put it here. The reason SEO is an ongoing subject is because the rules change as the search engines change their algorithms and how the decide to rank sites. This is no different with the various forum software, whether it's free or paid. However, forums are a bit different from most hard coded websites, Content Management Systems, or blogging platforms in that forums seem to be the least optimized out of the box.

Not only are the title tags and URLs not user or search engine friendly, but the biggest case against forums are is the duplicate content, which is still a major issue when it comes to SEO. However, I'd like to answer some other questions about forum SEO first, then we'll cover the duplicate content problem.

Search Engine Friendly or Dynamic URLs.
It seems the programmers who create the forum software pay little attention to optimization when creating forum software. This seems to have been the case since the beginning and is still true today. vBulletin, PHPBB, MyBB, and other forums all use dynamic URLs. There was time when this was a major issue with forum owners as the search engines had trouble reading and indexing threads and posts. It's not the URLs themselves, it's the fact that forum pages are stored in a database and made it hard for the search engines to access.

The solution is to use the Apache Mod Rewrite to make the URLs static. This method can also be used to make the URLs more user friendly, shorter, and keyword rich. The is normally accomplished by the use of some sort of forum mod or modification. Some mods only rewrite the URLs; others go the whole distance and make the title, description, and keyword meta SEO and user friendly. However there may no longer be a need to use Mod Rewrite to rewrite the URLs.

Search engines have advanced a great deal and no longer have any problems indexing dynamic URLs, so the question is 'do we still need to use SEO friendly (static) URLs?'. The answer is yes and no. If your forum is well established and is using dynamic URLs, you may want to think twice about adding a mod. When you change to static URLs, the old URLs will no longer exist, and without redirecting each one to the new versions, your forum could be left with 1000s of dead URLs in the search engine indexes. Most mods that I know of will not redirect the old dynamic URLs to the newly created static URLs.

On the other hand and if your forum is new, you have a choice to make. You don't need to modify URLs for the search engines, but you may want to use shorter, easier to remember (user friendly), keyword rich URLs. In that case, you can install an SEO mod without worrying about 100s or 1000s of well indexed, well aged pages being lost.

Meta Title, Description, and Keywords.
We can pretty much ignore the keyword meta tag, as it is common knowledge that the search engines will. The Title and Description tags are still important however. You should find that MyBB, vBulletin, and PHPBB, use SEO friendly titles out of the box. Other forum software may not. Descriptions are another issue. You may be able to find a mod that only affects the Title and Descriptions, or have a programmer make the modifications for, assuming you are not a programmer yourself.

My suggestions for titles are:

Only include the title of the thread. Remove any extranious wording like the name of your forum. Including the name like this "Project Webmaster - How To Make Money Online" or even worse "Project Webmaster - Viewtopic - Post Title" are a wast of valuable real estate. In this case the title should only read "How To Make Money Online".
Use page numbers for paginated pages. If my thread titled as above where to break over into multiple pages, I would want the titles to include something like Pg. 2, Pg. 3, etc.. This makes the titles on paginated pages unique. This gives you a better chance of having multiple pages from the same thread, showing on the same SERP.

The final and by far the biggest problem for forum SEO is duplicate content.

Duplicate Content.
As most of us know, duplicate content is a major issue when it comes to SEO and forums are the worst about creating duplicate content. However, most duplicate content issues are easily remedied with the robots.txt file. The more obvious problems are the search feature (often search.php), Next Thread, Previous Thread, Printable Version, Last Thread, Newest Thread, and so on.

You can block the search engines from indexing some of these duplicate pages by adding lines, similar to the ones below, to your robots.txt file.

User agent *
Disallow: /search.php
Disallow: /printthread.php

However, other duplicate content may not be so easy to block. Did you know that most forums create a link to a thread as well as a separate link to each individual post within that thread. Talk about a lot of duplicate content! If you look at this tread you'll see the URL is projectwm.com/showthread.php?tid=221. Now hover over the post number (top right of each post) and you'll see this URL: projectwm.com/showthread.php?tid=221&pid=552#pid552.

That means the search engines are treating every thread in a forum as a separate page and each post within a thread as a separate page. To optimize you forum threads, you should only allow the search engines to index the entire thread as a page and block the individual post URLs.

This forum uses MyBB and luckily there was an easy fix for this and other duplicate content issues on this forum. MyBB ads an "&" to the post number link as well as other areas which create duplicate content like Next Newest and Next Oldest. It does not however ad the "&" to the URLs I want to be indexed. Therefor, all I had to do was add another line to my robots.txt:

User agent *
Disallow: /*&

This blocks all URLs which contain the & symbol. It's an easy fix, but very effective for blocking most of the duplicate content on this forum and very good for SEO.

Each forum software is different and you'll have to decide how much SEO work you want to do on your forum. As far as SEO mods go, there is usually only one main mod to use for each forum. vBulletin has only one SEO mod and you have to pay for it. MyBB has one SEO which takes care of the Titles, Descriptions, URLs, and dup. content. PHPBB, on the other hand, has several different SEO mods to choose from. However, there is only one truly comprehensive mod that covers All areas of SEO for PHPBB and it's free. The phpBB SEO mod is the best mod I've ever used or even heard of.

The above is meant to be a guide and each forum owner has different needs and beliefs, so I can't solve everyone's problems with one post. Luckily, this is a webmaster forum, and you can ask all the questions you like.

Yahoo Website Hosting

To sign up with a free web site at Yahoo/Geocities, get ready to have some problems up your sleeves. The only great thing about Yahoo as a web host is that it provides free service (they also offer premium service where you need to pay a certain fee). Other than the free site, here come the woes:

There are periodical shut downs on your account because you have exceeded your bandwidth limit. Since these shut downs do come every once in a while, you are given two options—to stay with the free service (a.k.a. you have to put up with the intermittent service) or you could upgrade to their premium service.
If you have signed up for a free web site, expect that your page would be bombarded with numerous advertisements. Of course, it is understandable that these ads do pay for the cost of your ‘free’ site but should there be as many? It seems to defeat the purpose of having your own web site!
When you get to the PageBuilder to build your own web pages, then be very wary. There have been instances in the past (way back in 2002) when pre-existing web pages have been eaten up or destroyed by the PageBuilder. It was a frustrating experience for those who wanted to build their own site. It was a big waste of time and effort for most of those who tried to access this feature which, clearly, did not work so well.
The Message Board would be a nice place to look at before you even consider signing up for Yahoo web hosting services. This board is just full of all the complaints of past and current clients. If these are not enough to forewarn you, then you might want to look at their customer service.
Yahoo’s Customer Service Department might as well be non-existent. They give you a bunch of numbers and only some of them really work. And when you do get to contact the numbers that have been provided, do not expect a warm, human response as you will be getting a voice machine with a pre-recorded answer.
There are other selections to choose from just in case you get confused with the primary answer and all of these other selections also have pre-recorded announcements which clearly tell the callers that they don’t even have the time to discuss the problem with them in detail. In short, there are no human beings to interact with!

Most customer concerns fall under the Customer Service category and this is clearly because no one interacts with a Yahoo web site hosting client! If you do try to contact them through e-mail instead, that would not make a world of difference since you would also get an automated response. It just makes you wonder why all those employees are hiding from the clients that give them their bread and butter in the first place!

With technical features that suck and even customer service that is even worse, is it still a wonder why there should be no recommendations given to this web hosting site?

Quote:One way that I’ve experimented with to build community and loyalty among readers on my blogs is to offer readers a free regular newsletter.

I’ve found that since started using newsletters that it’s added a new dimension of community to my blogs. Newsletter days have higher traffic for starters and there seems to be a growing relationship between many subscribers and myself. The newsletter isn’t the only reason for this but it’s had an impact.

Interestingly the rise of blogging has actually been the death of some newsletter publishers who have moved to blogging as a medium to communicating with readers and making an income - whilst my preferred medium is definitely blogging I see a number of benefits of combining email newsletters and blogs together as part of a wider web strategy. Let me share a few.

PaidSurveys.com and its Many Promises

The catchy phrase that makes anyone’s head turn towards PaidSurveysetc.com is “The CEO’s of Nike…Ebay…Amazon and Walmart are Tripping over Their own Feet to give me Money!” With such an opening phrase, who wouldn’t be compelled to investigate further?

And just a few paragraphs below this convincing phrase is the amount of money one could possibly earn--$3000 to $4000 every month! And if these aren’t enough to make you drool over this job, there is a sample calculator which could help estimate the amount of money that you could possibly earn if you answer a number of surveys each day. One would wonder whether it really is possible to earn that much money in just a month while doing other chores at home, staying home with the kids, or even having a second job!

Answering surveys online could be a good way to earn some extra bucks. Each survey normally costs $3 and some could be as high as $20. This industry isn’t new as there have been companies that pay for answered surveys as early as the 70’s. But back then, surveys are being mailed and then the correspondents just mail back their answers.

Paid Surveys’ other come-on-and-join-us features include: being paid while doing the things that you ordinarily do every single day such as driving your car; reading e-mails; or eating at your favorite restaurant. But do not get confused because Paid Surveys is not the company that distributes the surveys. They only act as the distributor of surveys from hundreds of companies.

Joining Paid Surveys is basically just opting in for a newsletter. Weekly, PaidSurveys.com sends out newsletters but not all of them contain free paid surveys. Some could just be advertisements that they want you to read. And if you are someone who is really bent on finding a job that focuses on surveys, then it definitely won’t help to see just the advertisements on their weekly newsletters.

If you are wondering if you could join for free, well, the answer is a resounding no. The usual joining fee is at $69.95 but there is a current discount so anyone could sign up at 50% off the price. The payment methods include credit card payment (Visa, Mastercard, Amex); e-cheques or Paypal.

If you are looking for some serious paid surveys, then this is not the best site to look for them. Your $30+ would not fetch you the number of surveys that they are promising on their very catchy introduction. Also, most of the paid online survey sites are not able to deliver the hundreds of bucks that they promise those who would sign up.

There have been many online reviews for other paid survey companies on the web yet among these numerous surveys, only a few have been done for PaidSurveys.com. In fact, it is not a very famous site for paid online surveys. But this does not mean that this site is not legitimate. It only means that it delivers less than what is being hyped on its site.

Looking at all this, it is now safe to say that there is no such thing as easy money. If you want to work on a legitimate task, then you have to exert some effort to gain the bucks that you should earn.

Blogs and blog comments are great for a small business owner because they allow you to socialize with others within your niche, which can indirectly promote your business.

This is true for both your own blog and comments on others, but one thing you have to be careful of is a commenter who is out to make you look bad.

Sometimes, it is your own fault, and sometimes, they are just being out of line, but either one can be damaging to your online reputation.

It is often tempting to defend yourself in either scenario, which can end up turning into a "flame war" which is always annoying to other readers. This will also reflect poorly on your reputation.

If you feel passionately about your stance and can keep responses in a professional light, you can also keep your reputation in this light, but when your resort to insults, that is when it gets ugly.
